Gold & Brass…

… And the gold medal for 10m air rifle goes to… Abhinav Bindra from India. It’s party time. Gold.abhinav-bindra Individual Gold. India wins it’s first Individual Gold in 28 years. It is definitely something to rejoice and this time it’s not about celebrating some PIO’s (People of Indian Origin) success or victory but one of our own…

Bindra had been fourth after qualifying but had a brilliant final round and the Indian, the epitome of tranquility, hit a near perfect 10.8 on his last shot to pull in front of Henri Hakkinen of Finland, who fell to bronze with a poor final shot. That late stumble by the Finn allowed China’s Zhu Qinan, the defending Olympic champion and heavy favorite, to salvage a bitter day with silver.

Responding to my question of what has he done for his country my friend cooly said: “I paid 2 Lacs. in Income tax last year… You can buy a lot of gold with that…” It’s hard to argue to that…

As long as we are talking about the ones who made it let’s talk about the ones who almost made it… Yes I am referring to Monika Devi who did not fail the dope test and ideally should have gone to Beijing Olympics 2008. She should have represented India in weightlifting. Period.

monika devi But, that did not happen. Obviously something went wrong. Even if that was a mere goof up, it can not be forgiven. Now, there is reason to believe that there could have been some foul play in her case. Monika herself expressed some apprehension to this effect when she was barred from proceeding to Beijing at the last moment. So many years of hard work and practice has come to naught. The career of a promising Indian athlete stands ruined. We cannot put our heads down and move on in life…

First Monika was barred from accompanying the Indian contingent to Beijing Olympics for failing in the dope test. And, then, after everybody has left we have a report that she has cleared the dope test. What is going on? Is this a joke? Isn’t there something called accountability in this country. Let us put an end to this bull-shit.

If this is the case of peer jealousy as Monika suspects, the peer should be taken to task. But, even so, the peer could not have manipulated everything to prevent Monika from going to the Olympics. If she has been deliberately prevented from going to Beijing, it smacks of a larger conspiracy. That is dangerous. And, that is dangerous for India.

Abhinav might have salvaged the image by winning a gold but then who know Monika might have got one more for the kitty… If we have been wondering why we do not have only one Olympic gold medal in a country of over a billion, this case is the answer to that.

This case actually reminds me of the joke that ribbed me for years… It goes that Indian are like crabs; because if put couple of crabs in a vessel you can be sure that none of them will get out since they keep pulling back the one that gets ahead…

I hope we get over this and the sports ministry sets an inquiry panel for this case… I wish that Monika takes part in the next Olympics and wins a gold that will prove a lot of people wrong!

  1. Even the case of Rathore, he failed this time. We forget our heroes. This time Bindra made it, but after 3 years no body would recognise him if he is on the street. We criticise them if they fail. We lack the spirit. You will find “Bindra” news for next 20 days and then it dissappears.
