Flash Fiction

I have been participating in contests. Ofcourse I participate to win and the main reason for this is that I can finally pay my blog-host. To this end I recently participated in Caferati’s 55-word Flash Fiction contest. The theme was Cheating.

Some storytellers like epics and sagas. Their stories span generations, dynasties, entire civilizations, nations, continents and galaxies. Not to speak of multiple volumes. Others prefer to keep their stories short. Some, very, very short. Stories told in a flash. A.K.A. Flash Fiction. Flash fiction is fiction of extreme brevity. The standard, generally-accepted length of a flash fiction piece is 1000 words or less.

The three entries I submitted are appended below:

Entry 1

She felt as if she was cheating. She had stopped sleeping with Teddy since last 6 months. It was not that she did not love Teddy anymore, it was just that she loved Dolly more. She thought to herself, “maybe that is why Daddy left Mommy, he loves the other lady more”.

Entry 2

“There is no such thing as cheating” he said, “you are not doing anything wrong”. In the same breath he said “there is no such thing as wrong or right, there are just things that you do and things you don’t”. Then he leaned in and kissed her and she forgot that she was married.

Entry 3

“Does this count as cheating?” he thought to himself “though I was dealt a tough hand, I never cheated and I would not want to start now”. He wanted to go back, rescind his decision but he could not do that. The thud of the body hitting the concrete shocked people around and he died.

If you were the judge which one would you pick? I can understand if you can see yourself as a judge but humor me and drop in your comments.

  1. uh!!! i m not a good writer, and of course cannot be the best judge…

however, from my point of view, i like the second story the most. the 1st n 3rd seem incomplete and have left me to wonder abt some things…

actually, i did not understand the 3rd story and its relation to cheating… maybe i m not a very good interpretor…. 😦

    1. @Nilay – Actually I just wanted reader's perspective if the stories are understandable or not. Even I felt that the third one is incomplete but I somehow was not able to finish it. 😦 The underlying concept of cheating in the third story is because the person is committing a suicide he thinks he is cheating life.

BTW, I can understand why you like the second one 😉
